Q: What got you interested in pursuing dermatology?
A: What fascinated me most was the largest organ of the body - skin! During my undergrad days when I was posted to the skin department, I realised dermatologists are the happiest doctors - relaxed and a lot of fun! As a dermatologist, I love the fact that I get to interact with all kinds of people, ranging from children to elderly patients. I’m happy that I can help people improve how they look and feel about themselves, and boost their confidence.
Q: What is your favourite area of dermatology?
A: I get a lot of fulfilment from treating youngsters who have acne. As a teenager, I too suffered through a lot of acne, and I know how much it can bring down your confidence. A lot of people think that acne can never be cured, and that it's just something that everyone has to go through. But the fact is that it can be treated, and the earlier you do it the better! So when someone comes to me with acne, I can empathise with how they are feeling, and I know I can help them out.
Q: What has been the most interesting or unexpected aspect of practising dermatology?
A: The same skin condition can look very different from one person to another - each body is different. Thus diagnosis is always challenging. And that's why as a patient you should never try to self-diagnose!
Q: What is the most important piece of advice you’d give to anyone out there to keep their skin and hair healthy?
A: The first thing is your nutrition & lifestyle, which everyone can implement. Eating healthy is super important - include a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet, and drink enough water so you are hydrated throughout the day. Make sure to engage in a lot of physical exercise. Nothing brings a better glow to your skin than a good workout.
The other simple measure everyone can take is applying of a good medicated sunscreen on a daily basis. This helps protect the skin from sun damage and tanning, as well as helping to reduce the chances of more serious problems down the track.
Q: How is Indian skin and hair unique?
A: Indian skin has such wide range of skin tones, which is unlike other countries. I believe we should be celebrating the beauty of all sin tones, from fair to dark. Indian skin also has a larger amount of melanin, which provides natural photoprotection (but that doesn't mean you should skip your sunscreen!). Indian skin is also thicker, due to which aging occurs relatively late. Most people don't know this, but Indian hair is actually known to be the healthiest, according to many studies. We also have more dense hair (more hairs per follicle), and also has more pigment.
Q: What do you enjoy about being on Remedico?
A: Remedico makes consulting with patients super easy. I can consult from anywhere, be it at home or in between patients at the clinic. I have an ample amount of time to draft the treatment plan, which allows me to study each patient's case carefully, and provide the best possible treatment.
A movie buff and a cricket enthusiast, Dr. Asmita loves to indulge in occasional cheat meals with her family, as she believes life needs to have balance!
